«Rates of Exchange» is Malcolm Bradbury's satirical novel, published by Vintage in paperback (310 pages, in English).
A British professor, Dr Petworth, visits Slaka, a fictional Eastern European country, invited to give lectures. Amid absurd encounters and misunderstandings, Bradbury satirizes state bureaucracy, language barriers and the cultural clash between blocs, with humor that underscores how difficult it is to communicate in a divided world.
It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1983.
For readers of contemporary fiction who appreciate British humor and satire of academic and political settings.
