«Requiem» is the novel by Antonio Tabucchi, published by Editions 10/18 in paperback (121 pages, in French).
An Italian narrator wanders through a deserted Lisbon on a July Sunday, in a semi-oniric state. Between noon and midnight he crosses paths with living and dead characters who bring back memories, affections and guilt. The boundary between the real and hallucination blurs.
Originally written in Portuguese, it was published in 1991 as «Requiem: Uma Alucinação» and was awarded the PEN Club Italia Prize in 1992. This French edition is from 1994.
For readers interested in Italian and Portuguese literature, magical realism and narratives set in Lisbon.

Antonio Tabucchi was an Italian writer and academic who taught Portuguese language and literature at the University of Siena, Italy. Deeply in love with Portugal, he was an expert, critic and translator of the works of Fernando Pessoa from whom he drew the conceptions of saudade, of fiction and of the heteronyms. Tabucchi was first introduced to Pessoa's works in the 1960s when attending the Sorbonne. He was so charmed that when he returned to Italy, he took an introductory course in Portuguese for a better comprehension of the poet.
