Saugut und ein wenig wie wir

Synopsis of Saugut und ein wenig wie wir

«Saugut und ein wenig wie wir» is the cultural history essay by Kristoffer Hatteland Endresen, published by Westend in hardcover (272 pages, in German).

The pig is at once a symbol of good luck and a metaphor for dirt and sin, but also a model for the human body and the most consumed animal of the last fifty years. Endresen follows the pig from birth to slaughter and reflects on appetite, aversion, meat and morality, and on the boundary between the human and the animal.

Translated from the Norwegian by Frank Zuber and Günther Frauenlob; the original, «Litt som oss. En fortelling om grisen», dates from 2020.

For those interested in the cultural history of food, the relationship between humans and animals, and ethical debates on meat consumption.
