«Saúl ante Samuel» is the novel by Juan Benet, published by Planeta in hardcover (298 pages, in Spanish).
The action takes place in Región, the author's imaginary territory, and follows the brothers Emilio and Martín as their lives intersect with the conflict of the Civil War. Between memory and decay, Benet constructs a dense and symbolic narrative in which the biblical story of Saul and Samuel becomes a meditation on power, betrayal, and morality.
Number 1980/2 of the Clásicos de Nuestro Tiempo collection, edited in Barcelona by Planeta in 1999.
Recommended for readers of contemporary Spanish fiction and novels set during the Civil War.
Juan Benet was a Spanish novelist, dramatist and essayist who also worked as a civil engineer.
