«Sleur is een roofdier» is D. Hooijer's collection of short stories, published by Muntinga in paperback (172 pages, in Dutch).
The title treats routine as a predator. In the central story, that idea applies to a couple and their surroundings. The stories include eccentric characters and extreme situations, such as a tenant who tries to pay a prostitute to avoid a death or a woman who announces she no longer intends to be beautiful. Irony, black humor and sadness.
Third collection of short stories by D. Hooijer, winner of the Libris Literatuurprijs 2008 and nominated for the De Inktaap 2009. Originally published in 2007, this 2009 edition belongs to the Rainbow pockets series.
For readers of contemporary short fiction who enjoy Dutch narrative and the black humor of disconcerting characters.
