«Straight Life» is the autobiography of jazz saxophonist Art Pepper with Laurie Pepper, published by Parenthèses Editions in paperback and in French.
Art Pepper narrates in the first person his life marked by alcohol, drugs and prison, without shying away from contradictions. His relationship with the saxophone, his attention to sound and his philosophy of performance run through the account, which portrays an American generation hit by war.
French translation by Christian Gauffre; this edition is from 1989 and the work was originally published in 1979.
The book is aimed at jazz fans and music biographies, especially those interested in the West Coast scene.
