In 1857, the Mississippi River bustles with activity as steamboats compete fiercely. Captain Marsh dreams of owning the fastest steamboat, a dream that comes true when Joshua York offers to refloat his shipping company in exchange for mysterious conditions. However, their dreams are threatened by a nightmare that stains the docks with blood. In this novel, George R.R. Martin chooses Mark Twain's Mississippi as the historical setting, creating a haunting atmosphere and an impeccable recreation that have consecrated it as one of the most celebrated vampire novels of all time.
