Travis Bickle, a lonely and depressed former Marine, returns from the Vietnam War to work as a taxi driver in mid-1970s New York City. Suffering from chronic insomnia, he drives through the city's slums at night, witnessing the urban decay. The novel, based on the screenplay for the cult film, explores his descent into madness and his violent quest for redemption.
