«The Elegant Universe» is Brian Greene's popular science essay, published by Vintage Books in paperback (464 pages, in English).
Brian Greene explains superstring theory, which describes matter as vibrations of tiny strings of energy and proposes an eleven-dimensional universe. The book addresses the conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics, and explains how superstring theory seeks to unify them in a single description of nature.
Winner in 2000 of the Royal Society Science Book Prize and the Lionel Trilling Book Award; nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.
Intended for those who enjoy popular science and want to approach theoretical physics without needing specialized knowledge.

Brian Randolph Greene is an American physicist known for his research on string theory. He is a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, director of its center for theoretical physics, and the chairman of the World Science Festival, which he co-founded in 2008. Greene co-discovered mirror symmetry, relating two different Calabi–Yau manifolds. He also described the flop transition, a mild form of topology change, and the conifold transition, a more severe transformation of space, showing that topology can smoothly change in string theory.
