In colonial Southern Rhodesia, Mary Turner, a formerly independent woman, struggles in a grey marriage with an ineffective white farmer. The farm's isolation, routine and tedium gradually undermine her stability; her relationship with Moses, the Black servant, becomes charged with a tension between attraction and rejection that anticipates a tragic outcome.

For upper-intermediate English students who want to practice reading with an adapted classic work.
