«The House on the Hill» is a beginner-level graded reader by Elizabeth Laird, published by Macmillan Education in paperback, in English.
The story presents María, a rich young woman, and Paul, a poor boy, who live in very different houses. The difference in fortune and Paul's lack of resources seem to make it impossible for them to marry, and the narrative follows the difficulties that this social gap places on their relationship.
It is part of the Heinemann Guided Readers series at its Beginner level, designed for readers with about 600 basic words.
It is aimed at beginner-level students of English as a foreign language (ESL) and is used as school reading in secondary schools.
