«The Marquise of O» is the short novel by Heinrich von Kleist, published by Penguin Classics in paperback (64 pages, in English).
Story of a woman who becomes pregnant without knowing how, a situation that challenges the conventions of the era and raises questions about innocence, responsibility, and the weight of society. Kleist wrote against the current of the German Enlightenment and portrayed human nature as irrational, ambiguous, and disconcerting.
English translation by David Luke and Nigel Reeves; work originally published as «Die Marquise von O...» in 1808. Part of the Penguin 60s Classics series.
For readers of classics and nineteenth-century German literature, especially those who appreciate short stories with psychological depth.

Bernd Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist was a German poet, dramatist, novelist, short story writer and journalist. Kleist ended his life in a suicide pact by shooting himself together with a close female friend who was terminally ill.
