«The Proving Ground» is G. Bruce Knecht's nonfiction chronicle of the 1998 Sydney-Hobart race, published by Grand Central Pub in paperback.
On December 26, 1998, 115 sailboats started the Sydney-Hobart race; only 43 reached Tasmania. G. Bruce Knecht recounts the disaster by following three yachts, including Larry Ellison's Sayonara, the Oracle founder. The adventure becomes a fight for survival: crew members thrown overboard and life rafts adrift.
English edition, 368 pages. The full title is The Proving Ground: The Inside Story of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race. The race left six sailors dead and several yachts destroyed.
For sailing enthusiasts and fans of adventure and survival literature; also a common read in book clubs.
