«The Short Life and Long Times of Mrs Beeton» is Kathryn Hughes's biography of Isabella Beeton (Harper Perennial, paperback, 512 pages, in English).
The book dismantles the myth of Isabella Beeton, creator of 'The Book of Household Management', a Victorian manual that defined the domestic ideal of its time. Hughes contrasts the public image of a confident matron with a 25-year-old ambitious young woman of scant household experience, who died at 28 due to poor sanitary conditions.
The work was originally published in 2005 and bore the subtitle 'The First Domestic Goddess'; this edition dates from July 3, 2006.
It will interest readers of Victorian social history, biography, and studies on women and nineteenth-century domestic life.
