«Tiempos difíciles» is Charles Dickens's social criticism novel, published by Orbis in the Biblioteca de Clásicos Universales collection in hardcover (352 pages, in Spanish).
The story is set in the industrial town of Coketown and follows the rigid educator Thomas Gradgrind, who raises his children Tom and Louisa under a philosophy based only on facts and figures. The lack of moral principles leads the young people to ruin: Louisa accepts a loveless marriage and Tom commits a crime that incriminates an innocent man. Dickens portrays the dehumanization of Victorian society, working-class misery and the dangers of radical utilitarianism.
Novel included in the Historia Universal de la Literatura collection, published around 1982 by Ediciones Orbis together with Editorial Origen. The Spanish translation was by Amando Lázaro Ros.
