«Tsugumi» is the novel by Japanese author Banana Yoshimoto, published by Feltrinelli in paperback (159 pages, in Italian).
Maria returns to the coastal town on the Izu peninsula to spend the summer with Tsugumi, her childhood friend. Fragile and difficult in character, Tsugumi contrasts with Maria's sweetness. Amid memories and first loves, the two young women live a summer in which friendship faces illness and farewell.
Serialized in Marie Claire and published as a book in 1989; awarded the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize. Italian edition in the Universale Economica collection, the first in a Western language.
Recommended for readers of contemporary Japanese fiction and for those seeking a story of friendship and adolescence with a summer atmosphere.
Banana Yoshimoto is the pen name of Japanese writer Mahoko Yoshimoto . From 2002 to 2015, she wrote her name in hiragana.
