Yonatán Lifschitz, a young Israeli, sees the kibbutz as a trap and wants to flee his marriage to start over. Azarías Gitlin, a solitary idealist from the diaspora, seeks to put down roots. Between communal life and the unknown, Oz poses the conflict between freedom and belonging in a land that can be refuge or prison.
