The life of Thomas Buergenthal was a difficult journey from his birth in 1934 to German Jewish parents, to becoming a judge at the International Court of Justice in 2000. Between these two dates, he survived Nazi camps, was educated in the United States, and dedicated his life to international law and the defense of human rights. His autobiography is a clear tribute to his father's powerful words: "Never despair under any circumstances." Young Buergenthal took these words to heart and, with immense will to survive, preserved his life and principles without succumbing to hatred or cynicism.

Thomas Buergenthal was a Czechoslovak-born American international lawyer, scholar, law school dean, and judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He resigned his ICJ post as of 6 September 2010 and returned to his position at The George Washington University Law School where he was the Lobingier Professor Emeritus of Comparative Law and Jurisprudence.
