En 1942, Seweryna Szmaglewska, miembro de la resistencia polaca, fue arrestada y conducida al campo de Auschwitz-Birkenau a la edad de 22 años. Estuvo recluida hasta enero de 1945, cuando consiguió fugarse durante la evacuación dictada por los alemanes.
