«Unterm Birnbaum» is the short crime novel by Theodor Fontane, published by Cornelsen in paperback, in German.
Set in a small rural village, Unterm Birnbaum tells the story of a crime and how the deed and its concealment disturb the lives of those who know about it. Fontane describes with irony the provincial atmosphere and the tensions that surface after attempts to hide the truth, in a brief plot combining suspense and social criticism.
The work was originally published in 1885. This edition is the student's workbook from the «Einfach klassisch» series by Cornelsen, adapted for grades 9 and 10 by Diethard Lübke.
Intended for students in grades 9 and 10 and for those beginning to read the German classics.

Theodor Fontane was a German novelist and poet, regarded by many as the most important 19th-century German-language realist author. He published the first of his novels, for which he is best known today, only at age 58 after a career as a journalist. Many of his novels delve into topics that were more or less taboo for discussion in the polite society of Fontane's day, including marital infidelity, class differences, urban vs. rural differences, abandonment of children, and suicide. His novels sold well during his lifetime and several have been adapted for film or audio works.
