«Vanished Splendors: A Memoir» is the memoir of Balthus, published by Ecco Pr in hardcover (272 pages, in English).
Memoir of the painter Balthus, born in 1908, written at the end of his life. It evokes his childhood in Germany, France and Switzerland, the bohemian Paris of the 1920s, the influence of Rainer Maria Rilke and his friendships with Picasso, Derain, Giacometti and Camus. It also reviews his passion for Chinese art and his ideas on painting, creation and Catholic faith.
Published in 2002, the text was related to Alain Vircondelet; this English edition is translated from the French by Benjamin Ivry and includes an introduction by Joyce Carol Oates.
For readers of artist memoirs and twentieth-century art history, especially those interested in Balthus and the Picasso circle.
