«Various Pets Alive and Dead» is the humorous novel by Marina Lewycka, published by Penguin Export in paperback (367 pages, in English).
Marcus and Doro lived in a commune in the sixties. Their children have taken opposite paths: Clara craves order, Serge hides his job in the City, and Oolie Anna, who has Down syndrome, wants independence. When family secrets surface, the story turns into satire of modern values, with hamsters, cockroaches, poodles and rabbits.
The novel was originally published in 2012; this edition appeared on February 28, 2013. The action takes place between Doncaster and London.
For readers of contemporary humorous fiction and book clubs interested in family and social satires.
