«Verte» is the children's and young adult novel by Marie Desplechin, published by L'École des Loisirs in paperback (176 pages, in French).
Verte, aged eleven, has no talent for witchcraft and only wishes to be a normal girl, to her mother's dismay, the witch Ursule. To steer her, her mother entrusts her each week to her grandmother Anastabotte, and Verte's progress exceeds expectations. The story pits family magical tradition against Verte's desire to be normal.
The work was originally published in 1996; this 2018 edition belongs to the Neuf poche collection and includes illustrations by Magali Le Huche.
Recommended for readers aged 8 to 12, especially for those seeking stories of magic and protagonists who want to decide their own future.
