Biography

Alain-René Lesage was a French novelist and playwright. Lesage is best known for his comic novel The Devil upon Two Sticks, his comedy Turcaret (1709), and his picaresque novel Gil Blas (1715–1735).

Alain-René Lesage was a prolific French author who wrote over 500 works throughout his life.

Although he began his career as a lawyer, his true passion led him to excel as a novelist and playwright.

His most famous work, The History of Gil Blas of Santillane, is a fundamental reference of the picaresque novel.

In addition to writing, Lesage was a performer and composer who left a deep mark on the fairground theater.

Born in Sarzeau in 1668, his literary legacy remains a key piece for understanding 18th-century literature.
