Gerald Brenan was a prominent British hispanist who spent much of his life studying and living in Spain.
His most renowned work, The Spanish Labyrinth, is a fundamental analysis of the social and political background of the Civil War.
In his book South from Granada, Brenan masterfully recounts his experiences during seven years in an Andalusian village.
Throughout his prolific career, he wrote a total of 24 works exploring Spanish history and culture.
In 1982, he was honored for his contributions by being appointed to the Diplomatic Service and Overseas List.
