C. S. Forester was born in Cairo in 1899 to a British army officer father.
Before becoming a writer, he studied medicine and served in the infantry during World War I.
His iconic Horatio Hornblower saga began in 1937 with the publication of Beat to Quarters.
He is the author of the celebrated novel The African Queen, which cemented his international success.
He spent much of his life in Berkeley, California, where he moved in 1940.
