Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, better known as Horace Walpole, was a British Whig politician, writer, historian and antiquarian.

Horace Walpole is widely recognized as the father of Gothic literature for his seminal work, The Castle of Otranto.

He originally published his most famous novel under the pseudonym Onuphrio Muralto.

A passionate architect, he revived the Gothic style through the construction of his home, Strawberry Hill House.

As the son of the first British Prime Minister, Walpole was also a notable politician and art collector.

His vast personal correspondence is so significant that it spans 48 volumes published by Yale University Press.
