Jack Schaefer was born in Cleveland and pursued his higher education at Oberlin College and Columbia University.
Before becoming a renowned novelist, he built a long career as a journalist and editor for various eastern publications.
His most iconic work, Shane, was written even though the author had never actually visited the American West.
Despite his early success, he did not move to Santa Fe, New Mexico, until 1955, years after his breakthrough novel.
Throughout his prolific career, he authored 51 works ranging from classic westerns to children's literature.
