Su debut, Travail soigné (Irène), apareció en 2006 e introdujo al comisario Camille Verhœven.
En 2013 ganó el premio Goncourt con Nos vemos allá arriba, novela sobre dos supervivientes de la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Él mismo firmó el guion de la adaptación cinematográfica Au revoir là-haut, dirigida por Albert Dupontel en 2017.
