«Khovanshchina» is Modest Mussorgsky's opera with stage direction by Dmitri Tcherniakov and musical direction by Kent Nagano, on DVD (2009).
Opera in five acts about an episode of Russian national history: a plot of intrigues and power struggles between rival factions, with the Old Believers as protagonists. Mussorgsky reflects «the past in the present», and Tcherniakov's staging underlines the timelessness of the conflict, close to Greek tragedy.
Live recording at the Nationaltheater in Munich (2007). With Paata Burchuladze, Doris Soffel and Klaus Florian Vogt. Subtitles in English, German, French and Spanish; 174 min.
For fans of opera, classical music and contemporary stage productions.
