Based on true events, 'Free State of Jones' tells the story of Newt Knight, a southern farmer who led an armed revolt against the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Tired of fighting for the interests of the rich, Knight deserts and joins other farmers and local slaves to create the Free State of Jones in Mississippi. His marriage to Rachel, a former slave, and the construction of an interracial community, made him a controversial and fighting figure in the history of the American Civil War. An action, biographical and historical film directed by Gary Ross and starring Matthew McConaughey.
