In 1830s Paris, Vidocq, a thief turned investigator, dies upon seeing the face of his executioner, the Alchemist, whose mask absorbs the souls of his victims. Journalist Etienne Boisset investigates that death and the crimes of three powerful men and the disappearance of young people, traversing brothels and opium dens in search of the truth.
