«Ariadne auf Naxos» is Richard Strauss's opera, released by Philips on double CD (in German).
Recording of Richard Strauss's opera combining tragedy and comedy: Ariadne is abandoned on the island of Naxos and, while the composer of a serious opera prepares its premiere, he is ordered to merge his work with that of a commedia dell'arte troupe. Conducted by Kurt Masur leading the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, it features Jessye Norman as Ariadne, Edita Gruberova as Zerbinetta, Julia Varady, Paul Frey, Olaf Bär and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the cast.
Double CD edition from the Digital Classics series, reissued in 2005 by Philips within the Classic Opera collection. The libretto is included in the case.
For opera collectors and admirers of Richard Strauss seeking a version with a great vocal cast and digital sound.
