«River: The Joni Letters» is the jazz album by pianist Herbie Hancock, released in 2007 on Verve Records, on CD.
It is a tribute album to Joni Mitchell: Herbie Hancock recreates her songs with contemporary jazz alongside Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Vinnie Colaiuta and Lionel Loueke. Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae and Leonard Cohen are some of the guest vocalists; Mitchell herself sings on «The Tea Leaf Prophecy». «Court and Spark», «River» and «Nefertiti» are featured.
CD with 10 tracks and 68 minutes of playing time, including two compositions not by Mitchell: «Nefertiti» and «Solitude». The album won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2008.
For listeners of contemporary jazz and fans of Joni Mitchell or of vocal versions with great accompanying musicians.
