«Shostakovich: Sinfonía n.º 4 en do menor» is the album by the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and Ladislav Slovák, released in 1993 by Naxos on CD.
Shostakovich composed this symphony in C minor, Op. 43, in the 1930s, but withdrew it from rehearsals in 1936 after Pravda condemned his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. The recording includes the work's three movements and showcases his dense, dramatic orchestral writing, from the Allegretto poco moderato to the Largo-Allegretto.
Recording made at the Concert Hall of Slovak Radio in Bratislava between 23 May and 1 June 1988. Total duration: 64'56". Naxos reference 8.550625.
For classical music listeners interested in 20th-century orchestral repertoire and the figure of Shostakovich.
