La trama sigue al cabo Herbert Asch, un hombre de gran integridad moral e idealismo que decide rebelarse contra el inhumano y absurdo sistema del ejército alemán, atrapado entre la rígida eficiencia prusiana y la brutalidad nazi. A través de personajes como el joven y maltratado artillero Johann Vierbein, Kirst construye una crítica mordaz que, aunque muestra la dificultad de vencer a un poder establecido que neutraliza cualquier intento de disidencia, logra cubrir de ridículo a toda la estructura militar mediante el ingenio y la resistencia individual.
