The action begins in 1942 with the murder of a prostitute in Warsaw, leaving three German generals as possible culprits. In 1944, the investigation of a similar crime in Paris collides with the «night of the generals», the conspiracy to overthrow Hitler. The novel was translated from German by John Brownjohn; its original German title is «Die Nacht der Generale» (1962). The novel was adapted into film in 1967.
