«A Reconquista de Olivença» is the romantic novel by Ascêncio de Freitas, published by Ulmeiro in paperback (211 pages, in Portuguese).
Chico Sacoto undertakes the war for the reconquest of Olivença accompanied by his blind mother; the journey takes him through a desolate and ghostly world where memories weigh more than a lifeless present. The work interweaves reality and fantasy in an allegory about hope and freedom of thought, and raises a question about the future offered to youth.
First edition published in Lisbon in 2001. Winner of the Vergílio Ferreira Literary Prize.
For readers of Portuguese fiction who appreciate allegories about memory, hope, and freedom.
