«Alma» is the novel by Manuel Alegre, published by Publicações Dom Quixote in paperback (225 pages, in Portuguese).
The novel evokes with nostalgia the enchanted places of Alma, the village of childhood; from that childhood come the images and emotions that guide a whole life. The work holds that there is no arrow without the bow of childhood, a metaphor for the origin of identity and memory.
It is the fourth edition, published in Lisbon in 1996; the work is subtitled «romance» (novel) and originally appeared in 1995.
Recommended for readers interested in contemporary Portuguese literature and in lyrical evocations of memory and childhood.
