«Astérix: L'escut Arvern» is the comic by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, published by Grijalbo in hardcover (96 pages).
The story is inspired by the Battle of Alesia, where the Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix surrendered to Julius Caesar: only the final scene of the combat is shown, and the rest of the album narrates what happened afterwards, with Asterix and Obelix as protagonists.
It is album number 11 in the Asterix series and in the Asterix Bilingual collection; this edition is from 1996, and the French original, «Le bouclier Arverne», appeared in 1967.
Readers of humorous comics and fans of the Asterix series will find a classic adventure with a historical backdrop.

René Goscinny was a French comic editor and writer, who created the Asterix comic book series with illustrator Albert Uderzo. Born in France to a Jewish family from Poland, he spent his childhood in Argentina where he attended French schools and later lived in the United States for a short period of time. There he met Belgian cartoonist Morris. After his return to France, they collaborated for more than 20 years on the comic series Lucky Luke.
