«Atala & René» is a volume with two romantic tales by François-René de Chateaubriand (Hachette Education, paperback, 238 pages, in French).
The volume brings together two tales of French Romanticism. In «Atala», the lovers Atala and Chactas flee through the wild landscapes of the New World while she struggles between her passion and a religious vow that torments her. In «René», a young European marked by tedium and melancholy embodies the sensibility and concerns of an entire Romantic generation.
Published in 2006, it is part of the Bibliolycée collection (no. 42) and includes a didactic apparatus with notes, questionnaires and analysis for studying the work.
School edition intended for high school students or students of French literature and for those approaching French Romanticism for the first time.

François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand was a French writer, politician, diplomat and historian who influenced French literature of the 19th century. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany, Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1822 to 1824 and as the French ambassador to Sweden, Prussia, the United Kingdom, and the Papal States.
