«Atala - René» are two short novels by François-René de Chateaubriand, in paperback (188 pages, in French), published by Editions Flammarion.
The volume brings together two tales of French Romanticism. «Atala» narrates the tragic love between a young Christian native woman and a Frenchman, marked by nature and cultural conflict. «René» presents the reflections of a European on solitude and meaning in a changing world.
Atala and René were originally published in 1801 and 1802; both arose from Chateaubriand's journey to America in 1791. This edition belongs to Flammarion's GF collection.
Aimed at students of French literature and Romanticism, and at readers who want to read a classic in French.

François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand was a French writer, politician, diplomat and historian who influenced French literature of the 19th century. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany, Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1822 to 1824 and as the French ambassador to Sweden, Prussia, the United Kingdom, and the Papal States.
