«Aucassin et Nicolette» is the medieval chantefable by an anonymous author, published by Distribooks Inc in paperback (192 pages, in French).
A 13th-century French tale, it narrates the love between Aucassin, son of the Count of Beaucaire, and Nicolette, a cunning Saracen slave. It is the only surviving chantefable: it combines prose and verse and alternates the burlesque with refined poetry. The anonymous narrator, influenced by Chrétien de Troyes, parodies chivalric epic with irony and liveliness.
Edition and translation by Jean Dufournet. Volume 261 of the GF Flammarion collection, in a bilingual edition. Published in 1984.
For students of French and readers interested in medieval French literature.
