«Aux marches du palais» is the historical novel by Rosalind Laker, published by Presses de la Cité in 1992, in French.
In 1664, a peasant fan maker gives birth to Marguerite at Versailles and swears to lift her out of poverty. The girl goes on to reach the court of the Sun King; the novel then follows four generations of women (Jasmin, Violette and Rose), up to Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution. Love, ambition and crossed promises run through three reigns.
The novel was originally published in English as To Dance with Kings in 1988; this French edition is from 1992.
For lovers of historical fiction and period romance, with the court of Versailles as the setting.
