«Awakening the Buddha Within» is Lama Surya Das's guide to Tibetan Buddhism, published by Harmony/Rodale/Convergent in paperback (434 pages, in English).
The book argues that every person carries within the wisdom and compassion of a buddha, even while living as a sleeping buddha. It explains the Noble Eightfold Path and the Three Trainings —wisdom, ethics, and meditation— and includes stories, meditations, and practices for applying them in daily life.
The work was published in English in 1998. The cover features the subtitles «Eight Steps to Enlightenment» and «Tibetan Wisdom for the Western World».
A suitable read both for those approaching Buddhism for the first time and for students with experience in this tradition.
