«Bajazet» is the tragedy by Jean Racine, published by LGF in paperback format (158 pages, in French).
The play is set in the seraglio of Constantinople while Sultan Amurat fights against the Persians. His favorite, Roxana, secretly in love with Bajazet, the sultan's brother, offers him the throne if he agrees to marry her; Bajazet, who loves Atalide, is caught between loyalty to his beloved and the threat of death. The conflict combines the cruelty of power, jealousy and duty in an oppressive atmosphere, with no way out for the characters.

Jean-Baptiste Racine was a French dramatist, one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France, along with Molière and Corneille, as well as an important literary figure in the Western tradition and world literature. Racine was primarily a tragedian, producing such "examples of neoclassical perfection" as Phèdre, Andromaque, and Athalie. He did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs, and a muted tragedy, Esther, for the young.
