Two Gothic children, Eldes and Dago, see their world destroyed and embark on an epic journey from Gutthiuda, in present-day Ukraine, to the Danube and Rome itself. Along the way they suffer Roman military corruption and witness the clash between barbarians and Romans, the tension between integrating and maintaining identity, and the advance of Christianity.
