«Billy the Kid» is the children's story by Michael Morpurgo, with illustrations by Michael Foreman, published by Pavilion Books in paperback (80 pages, in English).
Billy, a loyal Chelsea supporter who turns eighty, recalls from a park how in 1939 he was chosen to defend his team's jersey; the crowd chanted «Billy the Kid!» as he scored goal after goal. World War II changed his life. Michael Foreman's illustrations accompany this tale that unites generations.
This 2013 edition is a reissue of the work, originally published in 2000.
Aimed at young readers who are fans of soccer and historical fiction; also invites shared reading between children and adults.

Sir Michael Andrew Bridge Morpurgo is an English book author, poet, playwright, and librettist who is known best for children's novels such as War Horse (1982). His work is noted for its "magical storytelling", for recurring themes such as the triumph of an outsider or survival, for characters' relationships with nature, and for vivid settings such as the Cornish coast or the trenches of the First World War. Morpurgo was the third Children's Laureate, from 2003 to 2005, and is President of BookTrust, a children's reading charity.
