J. R. R. Tolkien was a distinguished philologist and professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford.
The author created the vast universe of Middle-earth, populated by elves, dwarves, and hobbits.
Although born in Bloemfontein, he developed his academic and literary career in the United Kingdom.
His most famous works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, are set in an imaginary prehistoric era.
