«Brokeback Mountain» is the short story by Annie Proulx, published by Scribner in paperback.
Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two cowboys, meet one summer herding sheep in the mountains of Wyoming. Their relationship begins as a casual attraction but ends up shaping their lives: both marry and start families, though they continue to see each other in secret. Proulx portrays a story of love and repression in the rural West.
Story included in the Wyoming Stories series, winner of the O. Henry Award in 1998 and the basis for the 2005 movie of the same name.
For those seeking a Western story with LGBT characters and a reflection on social repression.
